Malaysiakini - 'Pas bowing to DAP over hudud'

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas is being forced to bow to the DAP on the hudud issue, deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.

He said Pas vice-president Datuk Husam Musa's "about-turn" over his statement that the party would implement strict Islamic laws if Pakatan Rakyat took over the Federal Government was because of pressure from its secular coalition partner.

"Husam made a U-turn in fewer than two days. Where is the principle held by Pas? The principle cannot be simply cast aside," said Khairy in an entry on his blog yesterday.

He claimed Husam's switch was the result of objections by DAP leaders, such as Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng.

Husam had on Saturday reiterated the party's pledge to apply hudud during a discussion on political transformation in Malaysia after fellow panellist Khairy challenged him to state Pas' stand, which he claimed had waned after the March 8 general election.

On Monday, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat leaders came out and opposed the hudud plan.

DAP chairman Karpal Singh even warned that Pas' "myopic" political ambitions could sink Pakatan.

PKR information chief Tian Chua said the party and Pa-katan's stand was to uphold the Federal Constitution.

Husam on Monday was reported as saying that hudud would not be implemented as it required the consent of other Pakatan partners.

Husam refused to comment on the subject.

"I have nothing else to say. Everything has been reported. There is no need for further comment."

"If anyone wants to further discuss this issue, I am open to having a debate."
